Valerie Richie Pine was a celebrated American actress best known for her Academy Award nominated turn as Honey Bruce in Lenny 1974.
She won the BAFTA most promising newcomer and the best actress awards for Lenny and earned a best actress Oscar nomination for that role.
Pine also co-starred in Slaughterhouse 5 1972, Superman 1978, The Electric Horseman 1979, and Superman 2 1980.
In later life, she battled Parkinson’s disease and died at home in Beverly Hills on March 23rd, 2026, aged 82.

Valerie Pine was born September 3rd, 1943 in Galveastston, Texas.
Her parents were Lieutenant Colonel Kenneth I.
Pine, an army officer, and Wifford Renee, a former dancer.
Because her father was in the US Army, the family moved frequently, living at various posts during her childhood.
Perign attended college, beginning at the University of Arizona in 1961 and later at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
She had a lifelong love of dogs, gardening, and traveling, education, and early career.
After college, she became a showgirl in Las Vegas, performing at the Stardust Resorts Leo de Paris Review.
Pine’s acting career began almost by chance.
In 1972, an agent scouted her at a small dinner party for the role of Montana Wild Hack in George Roy Hills film Slaughterhouse 5.
She later recalled, “Acting wasn’t something I pursued.
The agent saw something in me and thought I would be perfect for the part.” Cast in Slaughterhouse 5, Pine’s debut film role made an immediate impact.
The character of Wild Hack was pivotal in that cult classic.

That same year, 1972, Pine did a layout for Playboy magazine.
And in 1973, she made history as the first actress to appear topless on American network TV during a PBS broadcast of Steam Bath.
Pine’s big break came in 1974 when she was cast as Honey Bruce, the wife of comic Lenny Bruce in Bob Fauc’s film Lenny.
Her raw, magnetic performance earned wide acclaim for Lenny.
She won the 1976 BAFTA award for most promising newcomer and the 1975 can film festival best actress prize.
She was also nominated for the Academy Award for best actress and the Golden Globe drama.

Career impact.
The Oscar nomination made Pine a recognized face in Hollywood and led to further leading roles.
After Lenny Pine continued to work in high-profile films.
In 1976, she portrayed Carlauanti, mistress of WC Fields, in the biopic WC Fields and Me.
In 1978, she played Miss Eve Teshmaker, Lex Luthther’s assistant in Superman.
This role earned her a Saturn Award nomination for best supporting actress, 1979.

Pine reprised Miss Teshmaker in Superman 2 1980.
In between she co-starred with Robert Redford in The Electric Horseman 1979, playing Charlott.
She even earned a Rzzy nomination in 1980 for worst actress in Can’t Stop the Music, a musical comedy, though that film later gained cult status.
Pine’s filmography spans 50 plus titles.
Besides those above, notable entries include The Last American Hero, 1973, and a cameo in The Cannonball Run, 1981.
In the early 1980s, she appeared in The Border, 1982, as Marcy Smith.

Later credits included a small role in What Women Want, 2000, and occasional TV roles, eg the CBS sitcom Leo, and Liz in Beverly Hills, 1986.
Personal life.
Perign never married.
In the late 1960s, she was briefly engaged to Bill Harmon, a gun collector.
But he died in a hunting accident in January 1969, one month before their planned wedding.
Later in 1969, she dated Hollywood hair stylist Jay Sebring.
In a fateful twist, Pine missed a dinner party at Roman Palansk’s home that night.
The party became the site of the Manson family murders in which Sebring and four others were killed.
Perign later quipped about this narrow escape, noting Hollywood gossip.
If you don’t like somebody, fix them up with Valerie and he’ll be dead within 3 months.
Illness and death.
In 2015, Pine was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.
Her condition gradually worsened.
Later reports indicate she had battled Parkinson’s and related tremors for more than a decade.
A fundraiser page noted her body began to betray her with essential tremors by 2011 and that she had endured surgery and treatments.
For years, her health issues limited her ability to work and she spent much time in care.
By March 2020, Sixer illness was widely known among friends.
It is with deep sadness that I share the heartbreaking news that Valerie has passed away.
A friend wrote on Facebook.
Pine died peacefully at home in Beverly Hills on March 23rd, 2026 at age 82.
No other cause was officially given, but her long battle with Parkinson’s likely contributed.
Tributes noted her perseverance.
She was a true inspiration who lived life to the fullest.
