Incident Report: Fatal Shooting of U.S.
Army National Guard Specialist Sarah Beckstrom in Washington, D.C.
UPDATE: U.S.
Army National Guard Specialist Sarah Beckstrom has passed after being shot by a jihadist, an Afghan national, in Washington, D.C.
On November 26, 2025, just one day before Thanksgiving, 20-year-old Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, a member of the West Virginia Army National Guard, was ambushed and shot in an apparent targeted attack near Farragut Square in downtown Washington, D.C., only a few blocks from the White House.
She succumbed to her gunshot wounds the following day, November 27, 2025, at a local hospital.
The incident has been classified as a violent ambush-style shooting involving a second victim, National Guardsman Andrew Wolfe, 24, who remains hospitalized in critical condition.
Specialist Beckstrom, from Summersville, West Virginia, had enlisted in the West Virginia Army National Guard on June 26, 2023.
She served as a military police soldier with the 863rd Military Police Company, 111th Engineer Brigade.
Described by family, friends, and fellow service members as a dedicated young woman with a passion for criminal justice and dreams of becoming an FBI agent, Beckstrom volunteered for the National Guard deployment to Washington, D.C., to support security operations in the nation’s capital.
Colleagues remembered her as someone with “quiet strength” who was committed to upholding the law and serving her country.
Her father later stated in a public message, “My baby girl has passed to glory,” highlighting the profound personal loss to her family.
The suspect, 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national residing in Bellingham, Washington, was arrested at the scene.
He has been charged with first-degree murder while armed in connection with Beckstrom’s death, as well as additional counts related to the assault on Wolfe, including assault with intent to kill while armed and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence.
Federal prosecutors from the U.S.
Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia announced the charges on December 2, 2025.
Law enforcement sources indicate the attack bore hallmarks of jihadist extremism, with reports that the suspect yelled “Allahu Akbar” during the ambush.
Investigations by the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force and Metropolitan Police Department are ongoing to determine the full motive, any potential radicalization, and whether Lakanwal acted alone or had ties to broader networks.
Lakanwal, who had previously worked with U.S.
forces in Afghanistan according to some intelligence assessments, entered the United States after the 2021 withdrawal.
The shooting occurred in a busy area of the capital during a period of heightened National Guard presence.
Eyewitness accounts described a sudden and unprovoked attack on the two uniformed Guardsmen.
Emergency responders provided immediate aid, but Beckstrom’s injuries proved fatal.
President Donald Trump addressed the nation shortly after her death, confirming the update and stating that Wolfe was “fighting for his life.” He expressed condolences to the Beckstrom family and praised the bravery of those serving in uniform.
This tragedy has sparked national outrage and renewed debates on immigration vetting, national security, and the risks posed by individuals from conflict zones who may harbor extremist ideologies.
Members of Congress have called for reviews of policies related to Afghan refugees and evacuees.
The Pentagon issued a statement mourning the loss: “The U.S.
Army is devastated by the death of Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, a valued member of our force.
Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends, and fellow soldiers.” The West Virginia National Guard and D.C.
authorities have coordinated support for the family.
A military funeral with full honors was held for Specialist Beckstrom, attended by uniformed personnel who paid respects as her flag-draped casket was prepared for transport.
The community in her hometown of Summersville and Webster Springs held candlelight vigils to honor her memory.
As the investigation proceeds, authorities continue to urge anyone with information to contact the FBI tip line.
The death of Specialist Beckstrom serves as a stark reminder of the sacrifices made by those who protect the nation’s capital and the persistent threats from radical extremism, even on American soil.
This incident underscores the need for vigilance and continued support for our service members.
The U.S.
military and law enforcement remain committed to bringing justice and preventing future attacks.
