As the New England Patriots prepare to make their triumphant return to the Super Bowl for the first time since 2019, the excitement in the air is palpable.

But while all eyes are on the players and the game itself, there’s another squad gearing up for the big day—the New England Patriots Cheerleaders.

These dedicated athletes are not just there to cheer; they are bound by a strict set of rules that govern their every move on gameday.

When the clock ticks down to kickoff, the cheerleaders will be right there on the sidelines, but their journey to that moment is anything but simple.

Megan Montiero and Lana Vogler, two members of the 30-strong cheerleading squad, have provided a rare glimpse behind the scenes of their gameday preparations.

They reveal a rigorous schedule that demands they arrive at the stadium at least six hours before the game begins.

For a 1 PM kickoff, that means they’re on-site by 7 AM.

But this Sunday, with a 3:30 PM kickoff, they’ll enjoy a slight reprieve, arriving at 9:30 AM.

However, the extra sleep doesn’t mean a break from the intensity of their duties.

“Our practice starts right away,” Montiero explains.

“We run through everything from the little things we do on the sidelines to a halftime performance, just go through everything.”

What’s more, the cheerleaders are expected to come prepared, often with their hair and makeup done before they even step foot in the stadium.

Although it’s not mandatory, arriving without a polished look can be risky, especially with unpredictable warmups and practice schedules.

“Sometimes we’ll have an on-field practice before the game, and you never know how long that’s going to take,” Montiero adds.

This means they must strike a balance between preparation and the possibility of needing to touch up their appearance in the limited time they have.

Interestingly, the Patriots Cheerleaders face a unique set of restrictions when it comes to their looks.

Once they’ve auditioned and made the squad, the appearance they present during those auditions is the same look they must maintain throughout the entire season.

There’s no room for drastic changes—no sudden hair color transformations or trendy styles that could distract from their uniformity.

“It’s kind of unique,” Vogler notes, referring to their self-styling requirement.

“Some teams have their own stylists, but it’s kind of fun that we all sit next to each other and have a designated spot in the room that we sit at every single game all season.”

Even their nails are subject to strict guidelines.

While the Patriots’ colors are red, white, and blue, any shade of blue is strictly prohibited.

Only red and white neutrals are allowed, adding another layer of complexity to their pre-game rituals.

Despite the rules, the cheerleaders do have the opportunity to interact with the players, a privilege not afforded to many cheer squads around the league.

However, due to their demanding schedules, they often don’t have the time.

“Our practice schedule is on their off days, so we’re not even in the facility at the same time,” Vogler explains.

The cheerleaders’ commitment to the team extends beyond just performance.

Each member can only serve a maximum of four years with the Patriots, and every year, they must re-audition to maintain their spot on the squad.

Once a cheerleader has completed four seasons, their time with the team comes to an end.

However, they do have the option to become “All-Stars,” serving as alumni who can step in if someone is injured.

This year, the Patriots will have two All-Stars cheering alongside them during the Super Bowl, showcasing the depth and dedication of the squad.

As the Patriots gear up to face the Seattle Seahawks at Levi’s Stadium in San Francisco for Super Bowl LX, the cheerleaders will be there, embodying the spirit and energy of the team.

Their journey, filled with discipline and dedication, is a testament to the hard work that goes into being a part of such a prestigious organization.

While the players focus on the game, the cheerleaders are equally committed to their roles, ensuring that the atmosphere is electric and that the fans feel the excitement.

The strict rules they adhere to may seem daunting, but for these cheerleaders, it’s all part of the experience.

They are not just cheerleaders; they are ambassadors of the Patriots brand, representing the team with pride and professionalism.
