The CEO Pretended to Be Ugly and Rude to Escape a Blind Date… But the Single Dad Still Fell for Her

The lavish restaurant buzzed with the sounds of clinking glasses and murmurs of excitement.
It was one of Chicago’s most exclusive dining spots, where the elite gathered to indulge in gourmet cuisine and showcase their wealth.
Among the elegantly dressed patrons, Victoria Lane, the CEO of a successful tech company, walked in, her heart pounding with anxiety.
But tonight, she was not the confident businesswoman everyone knew.
Tonight, she wore a disguise—a frumpy dress, oversized glasses, and a deliberately unkempt hairstyle that concealed her true beauty.
She had come to sabotage the blind date set up by her well-meaning friends, determined to scare off her suitor before he could see her for who she really was.
As she approached the table, she rehearsed her lines in her head.
“Act rude.
Be unapproachable.
Make him leave,” she whispered to herself.
Adrian Cole, a single dad with a warm smile and kind eyes, sat at the table, oblivious to her intentions.
He looked up as she approached, and for a moment, their eyes locked.
“Are you Victoria?” he asked, his voice friendly and inviting.
“Yeah, that’s me,” she replied, forcing a scowl onto her face.
“Nice to meet you,” he said, extending his hand.
Victoria hesitated, then reluctantly shook his hand, trying to suppress the urge to smile at his genuine demeanor.
“Nice to meet you too,” she said, her tone flat and dismissive.
Adrian raised an eyebrow, clearly taken aback by her attitude.
“Uh, so… do you want to order something?” he asked, trying to break the ice.
“Why would I want to eat with you?” she shot back, her words dripping with sarcasm.
Adrian chuckled nervously, not quite sure how to react.
“Right.
I guess we could just sit here and stare at each other,” he replied, attempting to lighten the mood.
Victoria felt a flicker of guilt.
He was trying so hard to be nice, and here she was, throwing up walls.
“Look, I’m not really in the mood for this,” she said, crossing her arms defensively.
“Why don’t you just go home?”
Adrian’s expression shifted from confusion to concern.
“Is everything okay?
You seem really tense.”
“Of course I’m tense!
I’m on a blind date with a stranger!” she snapped, her facade cracking slightly.
Adrian took a deep breath, clearly trying to remain patient.
“I get that.
But maybe we could just talk?
I promise I’m not as scary as I look.”
Victoria couldn’t help but let out a small laugh despite herself.
“Scary?
You look like a puppy.”
Adrian smiled, and for a brief moment, the tension between them eased.
“Okay, maybe a puppy that’s a little lost,” he admitted.
As the waiter approached to take their orders, Victoria felt a wave of frustration wash over her.
She was supposed to be pushing him away, not finding common ground.
“I’ll have a salad,” she said curtly, avoiding Adrian’s gaze.
“And him?” the waiter asked, glancing at Adrian.
“I’ll have the steak,” he replied, his eyes still on Victoria, searching for a connection.
As the waiter left, Adrian leaned in slightly.
“Can I be honest with you?” he said, his tone sincere.
“Sure,” she replied, feigning indifference.
“I think you’re putting up a front,” he said, his voice steady.
Victoria’s heart raced.
“Excuse me?” she snapped, her defenses rising.
“I mean, I get it.
Blind dates can be awkward, but you don’t have to act like this,” he said, his eyes searching hers.
“Why not just be yourself?”
“Because who I really am is not someone you’d want to be with,” she retorted, her voice laced with bitterness.
Adrian frowned, clearly taken aback.
“Why would you say that?” he asked softly.
“Because I’m a mess,” she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.
“I’m a CEO who feels like a fraud half the time.
I’m constantly judged and scrutinized.
I just wanted to be someone else for one night.”
Adrian’s expression softened, and he leaned back in his chair.
“I get it,” he said gently.
“Being a single dad is hard.
I feel like I’m constantly under a microscope too.
But hiding behind a mask won’t help you find someone who truly sees you.”
Victoria felt a lump form in her throat as she processed his words.
“Why do you care?” she asked, her voice trembling.
“Because I see you,” he replied, his gaze unwavering.
“I see past the disguise.
You’re more than just a CEO or a blind date.
You’re a person with fears and dreams.”
For the first time, Victoria felt exposed, and it terrified her.
She had spent so long building walls to protect herself, and here was this man, breaking them down with kindness.
“Why are you so different?” she asked, her voice shaking.
“Because I’ve learned that vulnerability is strength,” Adrian said, his tone earnest.
“I’ve had to face my own demons as a single dad.
I’ve learned that it’s okay to be imperfect.”
Victoria felt tears prick at her eyes.
“Why do you want to be with someone like me?” she whispered.
“Because I see potential,” he replied, his smile warm.
“Maybe you just need someone to remind you that you’re worthy of love, just as you are.”
The sincerity in his voice broke through her defenses, and for the first time, she felt the weight of her disguise pressing down on her.
“Maybe I need that,” she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.
Adrian reached across the table, his hand hovering just above hers.
“Let me show you,” he said softly.
Victoria hesitated, her heart racing.
Could she really let someone see her?
Just then, the waiter returned with their meals, interrupting the moment.
As they began to eat, Victoria felt a shift within herself.
She could no longer keep up the act; something about Adrian’s genuine nature made her want to be real.
“Adrian, I—” she started, but he cut her off.
“Let’s just enjoy the moment,” he said, a playful smile on his face.
“Who knows?
Maybe this will turn into a great story to tell our kids someday.”
Victoria laughed, the sound genuine and light.
“Kids?” she echoed, raising an eyebrow.
“Are you suggesting a second date?”
“Only if you promise to show up as yourself next time,” he replied, his eyes twinkling with mischief.
As the evening wore on, they shared stories, laughter, and a connection that felt electric.
Victoria found herself opening up in ways she hadn’t anticipated, revealing her fears and insecurities.
Adrian listened, his presence comforting and reassuring.
But just as she began to feel truly seen, her phone buzzed on the table.
It was a message from her assistant, reminding her of an important meeting the next day.
“Duty calls,” she sighed, glancing at the screen.
“Work never stops, does it?” Adrian said, his expression turning serious.
“No, it doesn’t,” she replied, feeling the weight of her responsibilities pressing down on her.
“I have to go.”
Adrian nodded, understanding.
“Hey, it’s okay,” he said softly.
“I know how it is.
But promise me you’ll think about what we talked about.”
Victoria felt a pang of regret as she stood up, smoothing down her dress.
“I will,” she said, her voice sincere.
“Thank you for tonight.
You’ve made me see things differently.”
“Anytime,” Adrian replied, a warm smile on his face.
As she turned to leave, she felt a mix of emotions swirling within her.
What had started as a night of deception had turned into something far more meaningful.
But as she stepped out into the cool Chicago night, she couldn’t shake the feeling that this was just the beginning.
Would she have the courage to embrace her true self?
And would Adrian still be there when she did?
The answers lay ahead, waiting to be discovered.
What would happen next?
The future was uncertain, but for the first time in a long time, Victoria felt ready to face it.
