Since the “accident” two years ago, she had lived inside a body everyone called damaged, inside a home that smelled of disinfectant and resignation. And Michael lived with guilt—quiet, constant, immune to wealth and solutions.

At first, he believed effort could heal anything. Therapy schedules. Advanced equipment. Renowned doctors. Structural changes at home.

His life became a system built around Ava’s care. Yet nothing changed. She remained still, distant, as though her spirit had locked itself away.

So when a boy stepped directly in front of them and pointed at Ava, Michael felt his chest tighten.

The boy looked no older than fifteen. Clothes worn thin. Shoes cracked at the seams. A life clearly lived outdoors. But his eyes were sharp, alert—eyes that had seen too much.

The woman you’re about to marry—Rachel—she’s hiding something,” Lucas said. “And your daughter is the one suffering.”

Ava shifted again, visibly shaken. Michael dropped to her level.

Ava… talk to me,” he pleaded.

She shook her head, but her hand trembled uncontrollably.

Lucas lowered his voice. “Please. Five minutes. If I’m wrong, call security. But if I’m right, your daughter needs you to listen.”

Michael hesitated, then nodded. “Five minutes.”

I swear on my mother’s life,” Lucas said quietly.

He sat down and asked the question that cracked something open.

Do you remember the night of the accident? Where was Ava coming from?”

“From a friend’s house,” Michael replied immediately.
